Taking a language course can be a great option for rounding out your 1st quarter schedule. If you intend to continue study in a language, it's best to do that while your current knowledge is still fresh. If you're interested in developing meaningful proficiency in a new language for personal, professional, or academic reasons, beginning that coursework early on will give you more options.
If you're considering a major that has a language requirement (e.g. English, Fundamentals, Comparative Literature, Global Studies, Latin American Studies, Linguistics), it's best to start language study as soon as possible. To find out if your intended major has a language requirement beyond what the College requires, visit that program's page in the College Catalog.
